Oíche Nollag Note Set
The Oíche Nollag Note Set note set is born out of a long-running collaborative relationship between poet Annette Skade and Mundy Walsh, founder of A C H A R A. Here’s a little about how it came to be:
I met Annette about 10 years, when I was living in Florence, Italy. She won a residency for Florence Writers, a cultural association I ran at the time, which was organised in collaboration with the Irish Writers Centre. During her stay I also interviewed her about her work and all things creativity.
We got in touch after I moved back to Ireland a few years ago, and I’ll be interviewing her again soon about her book of poetry Holdfast (more to come on that soon), which I found to be grounding and quietly powerful in its exploration of the short but impactful life of botanist Ellen Hutchins.
I had an idea about printing poetry on a note and I loved the thought of having the words of a poet on one side and the sender’s on the other. I also wanted a poem that recalled and evoked traditions, community, and treasured relationships. I hoped that it would be something that people might put on a mantlepiece, perhaps use as a bookmark, or maybe store and revisit next year. I wasn’t asking for much..!
Thankfully Annette ‘got it’ and, after a bit of brainstorming, Oíche Nollag was born. A short poem that speaks of Christmas traditions that bind us, that make us feel connected to something greater than ourselves. Especially now, when we can so easily lose ourselves online, nothing shines so brightly as a candle in an evening window, guiding us home. – Mundy

Poem by Annette Skade on the notes:
Oíche Nollag
under a pattern of stars houses strew hillside
a green burst of fields around each
we reach one another by boreen or track
every house a place where memories intersect
what shape can we make of this calling in
stories retold of neighbours long ago
fresh news of loved ones back or away
a candle in each gable end to guide us
