Winter’s Long Night Note Set
Winter’s Long Night Note Set is the Winter 2026 edition of Poetry in Motion.
Poetry in Motion is a project born from the idea of celebrating the words of a poet, alongside the handwritten words of the sender, to explore what connections such a combination could spark. I love poems that evoke traditions and community, celebrate community and explore Irishness.
And of course, I am eternally interested in the tangible quality of receiving handwritten words on paper and their potential to reinforce bonds that have perhaps been diluted by time, technology, or many other reasons.
This edition’s poem is by Maeve McKenna and celebrates the Winter Solstice. Or perhaps re-envisions it for us, reminds us, that in Celtic tradition the longest night was a sign of rebirth, the return of the sun. The worst had past, so to speak, and growth was already happening. The darkness hums to us and light stirs at this time, as Maeve says, from beneath the snow.

Winter’s Long Night by Meave McKenna
Our longest night folds round the sun
as midnight hums to sleeping seeds.
Bare branches etch the silver sky
while frost rests easily over fields
Somewhere in the heart of darkness
a single spark begins to grow,
the sun begins its gentle rebirth
and light stirs beneath the snow.
